  1. African American Studies is important to me for my education because it is my major. I chose this field to study for my lack of knowledge. There is always information given on famous pioneers in African American history but I wanted to know more about my culture and the people that we rarely hear about. Understanding more about African American history and current events allows me to know more about the world around me and to engage my world with an open mind.

  3. African American studies is important to me in many ways. My major is education and being of Caucasian descent, I am not very familiar with the past and history of African American culture. Being a teacher, I will face children of various races, such as African American. Knowing the history of their culture will enable me to connect and have something in common with these children. I also really enjoy learning about different cultures and ways of life other than mine and the people around me. It amazes me that there are so many different beliefs and traditions and I am looking forward to gain the knowledge of the history of African American culture.

  4. African American studies are important to my undergrad education for a few reasons. As a nursing major, this class will help me to have a better understanding of this population I will be interacting with and I can be more considerate culturally. Also, as a gen ed course, it helps give me a balanced education and a broader base of knowledge (which never hurts) :-)

  5. This African American studies class is relevant to my undergraduate degree because I am taking it to fill my humanities requirement in my general education. As a sports studies major it will help me explore the history of African American athletes and the events that they have had to endure and how that has shaped where they are tody. I am also thinking about a sociology minor so this course will obviously expand my knowledge in terms of the interaction between different people.

  6. This African American studies class will be valuable to me because it fulfills my humanities requirement for general education and since I am a business major, hopefully I can learn how influential African Americans shaped the industries that we depend on today. My general knowledge of African American culture is poor, so hopefully this class can fill in some of that empty space.
