Week 3 Question
I believe that slavery was beneficial to the economy and that is the reason it existed. Slave owners were able to harvest fields at faster rates and the cotton production rose drastically in a matter of years. Although slavery was favorable to the economy i believe that racism was the underlying root of the Atlantic Slave Trade. Before the mass transportation slavery existed as an economic benefit "African Slavery was neither racial nor hereditary"(29). I believe that the Europeans saw Africans being enslaved and sought to take advantage of them. Slaves did work...they did work that their owners were not willing to do. These owners knew that if they owned slaves their wealth would grow. If racism was not the bigger issue i believe that the Europeans could have and would have transported their own kind in large masses, or work hard for the wealth they sought.
